Trending Thursday: Dystopian Cover Trends

Welcome to Trending Thursday: a weekly post in which I look at all sorts of trends in YA fiction, blogging and more.  Today I'm looking at book covers:

Today's Trend: Great Dystopian Balls of Fire!

Do you believe that subtle visual cues can nudge your brain to make associations? I wasn't so sure -- until I started looking at YA covers.

In 2008, the image on the original US cover of The Hunger Games looked like this: a golden, circular Mockingjay pin.

And after that, it seemed like golden circles of all kinds were standard on YA covers, especially if the book was a dystopian or post-apocalpytic story.

There were covers that echoed the graphic quality of the Mockingjay symbol:

There were also the burning rings of fire...

Subtrend: Flat and Circular

There's another, related type of dystopian cover images that I think of as the manhole covers -- I'm a city person -- but maybe you'd say they were inspired by gears or a horoscope vector or a clockface:

Tell me what you think about cover lookalikes: do similar covers create a sense of association in your mind? And if so, is it a positive association, or an "no, not that again" feeling?

Countdown to Ignite Me, Part II

Welcome to the second installment of my Ignite Me countdown. I did this for Clockwork Princess, and it was so fun that I decided to do it again :)

Adam! Warner! Okay, that's what I don't really want to think about. When I first read the books, I was Team Warner all the way. And I still think he's a better fit for Juliette.

Then I listened to the audiobooks to refresh my memory on the first two books. I felt a lot worse for poor Adam the second time around. I still think Warner's a better fit for Juliette, but I really don't want Adam to get shafted... nope, I'm not thinking about that right now...

New trivia! Many of you said that my first questions were too tricky, so these are much easier!

Question One -- Adam Trivia:

In Shatter Me, Juliette twice compares Adam's big blue eyes to this:

A) Two Buckets of Water

B) Two Pools of Water

Easy, right? If you're not sure, you can check your answers at the bottom.

Question Two -- Warner Trivia:

When Juliette kisses Warner in Shatter Me, she says he:

A) Tastes like honeysuckle, smells like peppermint

B) Tastes like peppermint, smells like gardenia

C) Tastes like honey, smells like rain

Question Three -- His Eyes, His Eyes...

At first, when I saw the new covers, I was a little perplexed. Then I realized that Juliette is VERY interested in eyelashes.   Match the quote to the character: Adam or Warner??

A: "His eyelashes are like individual threads of spun gold lit on fire."

B: "I marvel at the drop drop drops of hot water caught in his eyelashes like pearls forged from pain."

Enter to win a copy of Ignite Me below :)

How did you do?  Answers below...

Question one: A. Yes, it was buckets.

Question two: B

Question three: First quote is Warner, second is Adam.

Countdown to Ignite Me!

Welcome to The Countdown Giveaway for Ignite Me

I was excited that I got to see my friend Lauren from Love is Not a Triangle this past weekend. In addition to all the other bookish things we discussed, we had a long conversation about the Shatter Me trilogy. We talked a lot about our apprehensions about Ignite Me  and, though she and I have different hopes about how things work out -- she's a fan of guy-next-door Adam and, though I'd pick Adam if I were matchmaking for a friend of mine, I think that Warner is a better fit for Juliette. I mean, they're both a little crazy!

However, the point of these posts will be to distract all of us from thinking about the triangle. And the ending. All all that.

I'll have a few posts this week about the trilogy, which will include trivia questions on Shatter Me and Unravel Me and chances to win a copy of the book, either ordered from Amazon or The Book Depository. Yes, this is open internationally :)

Today will be trivia questions. They're just for fun -- even if you get them wrong, you can still enter to win!

Question One:  Juliette's Craziest Metaphors
Juliette loves metaphors. I mean, she's crazy ... about them.

Which of these metaphorical statements did Juliette NOT make about her heart in either Shatter Me or Unravel Me?

A) My heart is a raging woodpecker.

B) My heart is thundering hoofbeats.

C) My heart is a water balloon exploding in my chest.

D) There are wirecutters carving holes in my heart.

Question Two: Juliette's Craziest Sensation Descriptions
Juliette is also very attuned to her feelings. Very very. She's hyper-aware of every single feeling, and often translates her emotional pain using very unusual imagery.

Which of these statements did Juliette NOT make in either Shatter Me or Unravel Me?

A) Someone is sticking forks in my back.

B) Blood is bleeding all over my mind.

C) The sky is raining bricks onto my skull.

D) Sharp knives are carving patterns all over my skin.

E) Every fist in the world has decided to punch me in the stomach.

F) My arms and legs are filled with plaster.

Answers way down at the bottom of the post!
Coming later this week -- quotes about Warner and Adam...

a Rafflecopter giveaway Answers: Juliette did not say B in question one, and D in question two.

Extra! Extra! Cold Weather Survival

Extra! Extra!

Extra! Extra! is my weekend post featuring brand new additions to my TBR pile as well as a summary of what's new on the blog.

This weekend I'm linking to Stacking the Shelves @ Tynga's Reviews or to Sunday Post hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

For Freebie Friday, I'm giving away a choice of three January ARCs. Open to US residents! If you're international, you can enter Hot Off the Presses.

Thanks to Macmillan for approving me for these, BOTH of which were featured on my Waiting On Wednesdays. So you know I'm excited!

Second Star by Alyssa B. Sheinmel

I've read and enjoyed all of Alyssa's prior books and this is a retelling of Peter Pan. I've been meaning to read Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson, also a Peter retelling, so maybe I'll read them back to back...

My Last Kiss by Bethany Neal

So I'm not super-crazy about afterlife books or amnesia books, but this is about a girl trying to prove she didn't commit suicide, and that intrigues me!

I'm freezing. Like much of the country, my area has been experiencing frigid temperatures. I'd stay inside and read, but I have a dog who needs to go out. So I bundle up and go outside! Today I looked online for the perfect glittens -- those glove-mitten combos, where they are fingerless gloves with a mitten cover on top. I have a pair, but they're really ugly.

Perfect Lies by Kiersten White. I started this and I'm confused, but I will press on!

Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott. I'm excited to try this.

What's new with you? Leave me a comment!
